"In her own perverse way, she loves Joker." - Bruce Wayne

History
Having a genius-level IQ, Harleen attended Gotham State University on a scholarship for gymnastics, where she majored in Psychiatry under Dr Odin Markus. To get into the graduate program, she had Dr Markus meet with her in her dorm room, then outlined what she believed would be a good graduate thesis. The basis of which would be 'There are only two circumstances under which a person disregards the rules of society. When they commit a crime, or when they're in love.' To guarantee her position, she aimed to allow Dr Markus to observe an independent experiment on the matter. The test subjects: a friend of hers and her boyfriend. After setting up the "joke" with her friend, her boyfriend came into the dorm and wondered why his girlfriend wasn't laughing at any of his jokes. She explained, according to what Harleen told her to say, that she had driven through a red light, whilst driving a stolen car after blackmailing Dr Markus and possibly shooting him. Hearing this, along with the evidence of a recently fired handgun, made the boyfriend run out with the gun, when asked if he still loves her. When Harleen found him in the gymnasium she found her friend's boyfriend laughing nervously, standing over a homeless man he had just shot, believing him to be Dr Markus. He begged her to help him shoot himself, asking her to do it because she of all people should understand why he had done what he did. The gun would go off, but only Harleen would know for sure what had happened.
Upon graduating, and with a glowing reference from Dr Markus, Dr Harleen Quinzel began her first-year residency at Arkham Asylum. As soon as she was accepted by Dr Arkham, she was assigned the Joker case for many reasons. No one had ever been able to get through to the Joker, if Harleen could do it then her career would be set; and because if she was unable to help him at all, it wouldn't screw him up any further than he already was. So, she was allowed complete access to the clown prince of crime. In their first session together, she introduced herself as Harleen Quinzel, and asked him if he wouldn't mind talking to her. Until then, he had been silent with the other doctors, or constantly attempting to break free and kill them. In response to her request to speak with him, he told her "I say you're going to die, and I'm going to kill you."
It was her immediate belief that if she could get Joker talking to her, regularly, and wanting to speak with her that she could help him. So she engaged him in conversation about how he would kill her. "Rape, first. Shame to let a figure like that go to waste. Then... bite your throat out." He considered for a moment, and then grinned a bit, adding, as if it would complete the joke. "Might fuck the hole afterward, especially if you were a screamer." Much to Joker's surprise Harleen seemed un-phased, in fact she responded with a casual "Ohhh.. so you like my figure, do you Mr. Joker? I'm flattered, thank you." And she genuinely seemed to appreciate what he had said. "But wouldn't a blow job be better, I mean.. throats don't suck. And when you fuck my throat, you won't know if I wanna swallow or not.. its just gonna go where it goes, you know what I mean? Wouldn't you like to know if I wanted to find out what you tasted like, and swallow? And frankly, I'll bet I would scream.. but I happen to think I sound pretty good when I'm in the middle of an orgasm, but I guess we'll find out if I sound as good in the middle of being throat fucked and dying. I dunno, its your plan.. just thought something else might be more fun. Its a good plan though, Mr. Joker. So do I die from the bite in my throat, or do you do more to me?"
Rather quickly, in Harleen's opinon, the Joker was showing a mad affection for her when he said "Pretty girl like you? I'd stuff ya. Stick ya in the corner of my cell. Probably start the process while you were still alive." He grinned a bit, wickedly, luridly, as if thinking of the best punchline possible to a terrible, sick joke. "How about that... right before you die, you get to see me hold your heart in my hand." Now THAT... was a way to end a life; pretty thing, stuffed and stuck in the corner of a madman's cell... forever. Though in his mind, Harleen was at the very bottom of his list on staff at the Asylum who he wanted to kill first.
Her plan began to work when, after their session was over and she was cleaning up the room to leave, he demanded to see her the next day. And when she showed up the next day, and nearly ignored him entirely, illiciting the response from the joker of him beginning to grow agitated. After all, he wanted her attention on him! She was supposed to be here to talk to him, damn it! He stomped one of his feet on the ground, hard, before he shouted. "WHAT IN THE BLUE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!" He was obviously pretty pissed off. He wanted to talk to her, not just look at her, and think of what he'd like to do to her... all of the lurid, awful things he wanted to do with her.
Eventually the conversation worked its way to the subject of the Batman. "What about you Mr. J.. how do you want your punchline to go? And who do you imagine doing it?" She watched his green eyes, with her own blue eyes, fixed on giving her total attention to him. "We ALL have to go sometime, so tell me.. who's going to enjoy your punchline?" He blinked at her question, "What kind of question is that?" He said it right out loud, as if he didn't want to think of his own mortality. She put her hands up, as if to defend herself. "Hey, we've been thinking about how my punchline would come.. why shouldn't we discuss yours?" He continued, admitted to her the depth of his obsession with the Batman. "Fine. You wanna know? Bats. I'm going to push him right over the edge, or help to do it, and he's going to take me down, once and for all. Batsy's going to be the one to enjoy it... assuming I don't get to him first. If I do..." he actually gave this one a hell of a lot of thought, and then laughed, grinning afterward. "I'm thinking I'll be all alone. If the Bat can't do the job, then I will." He leaned forward, grinning a bit, quite morbidly. He liked these morbid little conversations. "Do you think a man can turn his head hard enough, and fast enough, to break his own neck, Harl? I think so... I'm going to be the first to do it, and I'll laugh all the way." She sat back in her chair then, and listened to his words on the Bat, and how he'd end up punching his own line. "Batman seems pretty important to you, Mr. J. Why is that?"
He glared at her, when she brought up the Bat, and snarled a bit, but not directly at her. "He made me what I am... he started the jokes, Harl." He grinned a little bit, and turned his eyes on her. "I guess you could say that he drove me Batty. It only seems fitting that the end should come from him... or that I should give him his punchline, don't you think?" He wasn't going into the details, because, frankly, they were a little on the fuzzy side. "It's the game we play, and, one day, one of us is going to win... and one of us will get the joke." In this one conversation she was learning more about the Joker, than anyone else ever had. "So this Bat made you pull everyone elses punchlines.. something you seem to enjoy an awful lot. But you seem so angry about him making you what you are. What if there is nothing wrong with you, Mr. J? What if you're completely sane, and rational.. but you're playing the part that something bigger wants you to play.. you're the opposite of the bad, because THAT is who YOU are. Without him, there is obviously no you. Though I wonder if he cares enough about you, that if he pulled your punchline, if he would kill himself.. like you'll do it?" she shrugged softly, her words said in a tone that was remarkably like she didn't care either way.. it was just simply something to consider.
She was scratching him to the core, and he didn't like it. He shifted in his seat, as if he were suddenly really uncomfortable, and glared at her. She got him... got him a little too good, and his reply wouldn't have much to do with the topic. "Who sent you, anyway? You come in here, and act like you understand me, and get me talking. Who put you up to this?"
The fact was, Joker himself had sent her, whether he realized it or not. His psychosis was fascinating, and she desperately looked forward to getting to know the Joker even better. She could tell already that the Joker was capable of such unimaginable depths. But she didn't realize, ignored, or welcomed his growing fascination with her. "Do you not want anyone to ever get close to you, Mr. J.. even if its just to help you? I mean, seems like you give everyone a punchline that gets close to you.. its why you're in that jacket, and hooked up to that chair. Don't you ever wanna get close to someone? Other than to rape them, I mean." He eyed her, as she asked if he would ever want to get close to somebody, and smirked. "Why would I? There's nothing... FUNNY about it." Hell, from what he'd seen, it was really just a bunch of heartache. Crying. Ugh. Who needed it?
She shrugged softly, as she sat back once again, and crossed her legs as she thought of his last words. "I dunno Mr. J, I have a lot of fun with my boyfriend. And frankly.. having a warm body close to me.. feels awful nice." He smirked a bit, and then looked at her, sidelong. A boyfriend? For her? Of course. Still... was there a flash of jealousy in his eyes? Oh, you'd better believe it. "Lucky fella." Too bad he was going to have to die, now, too. Just as soon as he got out of this place. She smiled softly, not even considering what he could be thinking of doing to the boyfriend she mentioned, looking away from him, and letting out a soft sigh as if she was thinking about her boyfriend. "Anyone who has someone, is lucky Mr. J. Its what keeps the world goin' round after all.. the jokes keep comin'."
